Refit projects on pocket superyachts—typically 55 to 80 feet—sit in a tricky middle ground. The systems are complex enough to require professional oversight, but the onboard team often isn’t structured like a full superyacht operation.

In thw 55' to 80' yacht segmentsegment, it’s common to have a capable captain holding a Master 200 GT ticket, but not a Master 3000 GT or unlimited + background with years of large-yacht refit exposure. It’s also common to not have a dedicated engineer onboard. That combination creates a predictable risk: the owner ends up paying “superyacht-level” money without “superyacht-level” project control.

Common failure points we see in 55–80 ft refits:

·         Scope creep: “While we’re at it…” turns into weeks of extra work and uncontrolled cost.

·         Unclear specifications: suppliers quote based on assumptions; the yard builds what they interpreted.

·         Weak change management: changes happen verbally, without updated drawings, pricing, or schedule impact.

A Master 200 GT captain can be exceptionally competent—often more hands-on than large-yacht captains. But during a refit, the captain is typically expected to:

·         A procurement and lead-time plan

2) Build a budget that survives reality

Pocket-superyacht refits often start with optimistic numbers and vague allowances.

A PM creates a budget that includes:

·         Transparent line items and supplier comparisons

·         Installation labor assumptions (often the hidden cost)

·         Contingency planning for known risks

·         Payment milestones tied to deliverables

The goal isn’t to make refits cheap. The goal is to make costs predictable—and defensible.

3) Coordinate yard, suppliers, and specialists

Refits are multi-disciplinary by nature. The PM coordinates:

·         Yard teams and subcontractors

·         Equipment manufacturers and installers

·         Surveyors, electricians, riggers, painters, composite teams

·         Compliance requirements (flag, CE, safety equipment)

Most delays happen at the interfaces between trades. A PM manages those interfaces proactively.


4) Protect the owner with documentation and change control

When money and deadlines tighten, verbal agreements become dangerous.

A PM enforces a simple rule: if it’s not written, it doesn’t exist.

·         Written approvals for changes

·         Updated pricing and schedule impact

·         Photo documentation and progress reports

·         Systems are tested under load, not just powered on

·         Installations follow manufacturer requirements

·         Wiring, ventilation, and access are serviceable

·         Safety systems are compliant and documented

This is especially critical for modern upgrades like air conditioning, watermakers, lithium battery banks, generators, and hybrid/electric propulsion.
